ITINERARY

Angkor Grand Circuit

The Angkor Grand Circuit navigates the outer temples of the central area in Angkor. There many more interesting temple to visit as list below.

Preah Khan

Originally recorded as Nagara Jayasri (holy city of victory), Preah Khan is a large and grand ancient temple at Angkor Archeological Park, Siem Reap. It was built-in the 12th century under the reign of king Jayavarman VII (reign 1181-1218 AD) to honor his father who in turn built the nearby Ta Prohm to honor his mother. It is one of the must-visit temples in Angkor.

Located north of Angkor Thom, Preah Khan is on an intentional central axis with the Jayatataka Baray, Neak Pean, and Ta Som all once being hydraulically linked. Not just a temple, from all indications the 56ha site was a royal city that once housed hundreds of wooden buildings for monks, students, and workers inside its outer enclosure wall (700m x 800m), while the much smaller third enclosure (165m x 215m) contains the principal religious temple likely only accessed by royalty and their gurus.

Neak Poan

Constructed during the era of king Jayavarman VII (reign 1181-1218 AD), Neak Pean (or Neak Poun) is one of the most mysterious, and unique temples, of the Angkorian Empire. Located on a man-made island at the center of a massive baray (lake), hidden amongst the dense woods is a very special Buddhist temple. Rising from a double circular lotus-styled base, the central shrine sits at the center of a large basin with a further four smaller shrines that join this basin with smaller basins at each cardinal point.

Located east of Preah Khan temple which it is associated, and situated at the center of Jaytataka Baray which measures 3600 by 900 metres, the island of Neak Pean is 350m per side covering 120000 sqm featuring laterite walls with steps at each cardinal point forming its perimeter. The temple and basins discussed below sit at the very center of the island and are surrounded by auxiliary basins not formed of laterite.

Krol Ko Temple

Krol Ko Temple is an ancient Buddhist temple located in Angkor Archeological Park, Siem Reap, Cambodia. It was built at the end of the 12th century, in Bayon style, under the rule of king Jayavarman VII (reign 1181–1218 AD). To its south is the famous Neak Pean island temple of the Jaytataka Baray.

The ancient site features remains of an outer wall, that opens to the east leading to (what appears to be) a cruciform terrace meeting a gopura and another outer wall enclosure. This is surrounded by a 3/4 moat and a permanent basin to the northeast. Inside the enclosure are the remains of a library building and the central shrine that joins the entrance gopura via its own laterite cruciform terrace.

Pre Rup Temple

Located near the road, Pre-Rup offers the chance to see one of the grandest brick temples of the ancient empire. You can enter the site from the south or the east entrance while the latter is the traditional also offering a parking area. You can spend around 40 minutes here, or longer should you wish, with the main highlights being the monumental nature and scale of the site, the decorative lintels above the doors of each tower, and the traces of devata flanking those doors on the upper towers. Also, the views from atop are pretty cool. This temple is another site along the tour route known as the Grand Circuit.

Ta Som Temple

Located 30 min (17 km) northeast of Siem Reap city and 15 min from Angkor Wat, Ta Som is an easy and peaceful temple to visit. The temple is entered from the western gate, has a flat layout, is easy to navigate and the total distance from the western outer gate to the eastern outer gate is only 200m.

Highlights include that special lost temple charm similar to Ta Prohm but on a slightly smaller scale including its beautiful gopura with the smiling faces and especially so the “jungle charm” of the outer eastern gate. Take note of some of the unusual Apsaras, well-preserved Dvarapala, and the pediments and also the umounted pediments resting at ground level.

Also there are some more temple in this circuit.
